Topic: Vote the Next Forum Software for the Community Forums!

Dear all,

We're currently planning to "upgrade" the forum software to a more sophisticated one to curb with the huge number of users. Do give a vote on what you wish to have here as you will still be the ones using the community forums for theme support. smile

Well having a simple one like this is good, but with a large amount of spammers registering and posting spam links we need to have a more sophisticated one to control them.

Re: Vote the Next Forum Software for the Community Forums!

I like simplepress as well. It offers a simple math verification question to protect from spam. In the upcoming version 5 they will be supporting akismet as well.

Akismet may have a solution for your current forums.

The only thing I don't like about these forums is the "security token" warning and that I don't get emails for private messages.

There's a Akismet plugin for punBB but it doesn't work.

Re: Vote the Next Forum Software for the Community Forums!

vBulletin is by far the safest option. Although I (and most people using WP and Arras) highly support and recommend phpBB and all open-source software. But phpBB has let me down in the past regarding spam so I have to call it vBulletin this time, unfortunately.

I have voted for vBulletin. I have recently migrated my phpbb to vbulletin and I'm feeling great. It uses more resources and is a bit slower (but I have installed vbSEO), but it gives you the opportunity to do everything in professional manner.
About spam, vbulletin has many advanced free plugins to fight spam. Personally I just use the method of the random question: if you use questions like

vBulletin would be the best option for a forum with lots of members and also for spam

Anything but vBulletin. They're now owned by a scammy company who is reported to have broken contracts and raised upgrade costs randomly. Strongly recommend either phpBB for free or Xenforo which is simply an amazing forum system.

Doesn't vbulletin cost about $200?

Please try to use Arras as your default theme in here too both regarding marketting the product and aslo being easier to find bugs for you too.

Moreover, any configuration can directly be published here in your documentions and all users can see the results. Accordingly, they also could use these plugins and documentations that they know would work with Arras!

Appreciate your concern.

I've looked at most if not all free forum packages and always end up staying with phpBB3. I've wanted vBulletin but if the above comment is true then it may not be worth the money.

I get very little spam/accounts with the custom

Have you chosen yet? If not I strongly recommend MyBB. Really easy to prevent most spam as well. There is a more in depth security and spam prevention sticky over on their forums but I (so far) use the "stop forum spam" plugin and "spamalyser".

Together the plugins prevent spam registrations and spam posts. Recaptcha is also integrated for registration and the team are working on a core feature called spamninja.

Besides spam prevention and control etc. it is fast and easy to use software with just the right amount of core features. I also find it more logical than phpBB and far better to theme (if you so wished).

Aventura

P.S. the akismet plugin for myBB also doesn't work too well so I guess its because akismet is geared more for comments

VBulletin is undoubtedly the best, there is no any kind of discussion about it but is very expensive. So I would choose phpbb or Simple Machines Forum. From free for me are the best.
